Squaretrade YMMV? Can get smartphone protection plan as inexpensive misc electronics plan if phone is under $300

So I got a OnePlus One and having decided I'm keeping it and with my 30 day mark creeping up, I decided to get a protection plan from Squaretrade as I did with my previous phone, and since none of the coupons I had were working. I called. The rep informed me unsolicited that that fixed price smartphone plans are supposed to be for phones that cost $300 or more, especially flagships. He said anything under $300 can be done as misc electronics, which costs much less because it has variable pricing. So I got it with accidental damage coverage and a 30% off coupon, so for under $50 including tax, I got a 3 year plan. He said it's an official internal policy even if it's not advertised.

So if you're getting any phone where the base price is under $300 (the OnePlus One, at $299 now, was just barely under), it might be worth calling SquareTrade and trying to get this. It does make sense, in that it really shouldn't be the same price as a flagship phone protection plan.
